Just because San Franciscan Matt Nathanson plays solo acoustic guitar, don't write him off as a wimpy folkie with a chafed soul. Whether churning out ballads or straight-ahead rock 'n' roll, Nathanson is a gifted songwriter who just happens to be in touch with his emotions well enough to share them without being sappy or self-pitying. He'll be doing it alone on this outing, but when he records, he gets the cream of the San Francisco area to back him up, as on his latest release 'Still Waiting for Spring.' -- Grant Britt
