The Highliner is in a better than average, "upscale" strip mall, and this tavern is more eclectic than you'd expect. Featuring music ranging from country to jazz to world-beat, there's something here to please almost every taste. Specialty beers and pub food are available, and those who venture down the narrow hallway will find pinball, pool and darts to entertain them when the music and beer is simply not enough. Outdoor seating looks over the water. A word of warning: Check a map first. This place is nearly impossible to find by address alone. The large parking lot offers ample spots. -- Kate Mulhern

A hidden gem

I've been ging to the Highliner for 8 or 9 months and have found that the food is better than ever AND there are so many menu selections it can be hard to choose. The menu prices are lower than the average pub or restaurant and the beverages were similar in cost to the other bars I spend some time at. Free parking is a definite plus. What I liked the most, was that since September the owner has been thinning out the bands that weren't worth your time and has filled out the entertainment schedule with a combination of classic rock (Neil Rush was great) and the Zydeco groups with their Cajun music and dance. The outdoor seating is great when the sun shines and you want to enjoy some beer from one of those pitchers with the ice in the middle., Six stars for the Highliner.

Doesn't live up to expectation

Well, if you read the editors' summary of the Highliner, it sounds like a pretty nice place. Nothing could be further from the truth. The "upscale" part is its proximity to Chinook's a MUCH nicer place. The Highliner is, simply put, a dive. I have to wonder if they got mixed up on this page. There's no narrow hallway, no pinball or darts. Outdoor seating overlooks the parking lot, not the water, and if you sit out there, you'll be sharing it with the smokers. The food is substandard as is the waitstaff, even for a dive bar, and the beer and wine are grossly overpriced. Be prepared to wait a long time for service. There is virtually no music, and certainly nothing worth the cover charge. But they do have a large parking lot.
