Seattle restaurants tend to be homier than their L.A. counterparts, but the sleek, modern Veil has hip written all over it. Overlapping sheers surround and divide the winter white dining room, cocooning chic patrons from the outside world. As evening advances, soft amber accent lighting gives way to a rosy glow. If you're feeling romantic, tuck into a corner for two -- if convivial, sit at the tall communal table, ideal for parties. Chef Shannon Galusha's surprising creations are inspired largely by fresh and local components: Devour Kobe beef cheeks with red onion cream and tomato confit; seared tuna accented with olives and pesto; or mini lamb burgers with a Moroccan accent. Finish off with salted peanut butter ice cream or roasted pineapple and passion fruit soup. Can't choose? A tasting menu is available nightly. If just drinks and nosh are in order, stop by the sexy lounge, settle onto a white leather cube, and sip Shiraz from Riedel stemware or a signature cocktail, with names like Devil's Bouquet and Clairvoyant.

What dreams are made of

My new hubby and I have been to Veil twice now, once in 2007 and last night for his birthday and to celebrate the return from our honeymoon. Our first visit to Veil last year left a very lasting impression - we cannot recommend this restaurant enough. The Celery Root & Oxtail soup, along with their fabulous desserts, brought us back a second time, although the soup has been replaced with a Cauliflower and crispy pancetta soup, which is also delicious. (As a nod to another review, the Fois Gras with PB&J is indeed back on the menu.) Presentation is always beautiful, and the way each course is served and presented turns your already memorable meal into an event, but without the pretense of haughty or snobby service. They manage to mix high-class food and service with a comfortable, relaxed friendliness that's refreshing. The appetizers are by far our favorite part of the menu; you could literally skip the entrees and spend all night sampling their delicious first and second courses. The lamb burgers are a treat, and the shrimp is even more delicious. But the highlight of our dinner this trip was the lobster macaroni - absolutely divine! We considered ordering another, but resisted and moved on to the entree, the Calamari pasta. Garlicky, spicy, and very yummy. We treated ourselves to a decadent THREE desserts, and our favorite was the peanut butter ice cream – simply heavenly. If you plan a trip to Veil, do plan to spend a pretty penny, our bill for one Theater dinner (prix-fixe), appetizers, drinks and desserts was $150+, but compared to other four- and five-star restaurants we’ve tried, no one compares to Veil’s incredible flavor profiles and impeccable service, and despite the hefty price tag, we’d go back in a heartbeat. After a year of my husband working as a consultant in Seattle, this is definitely our favorite restaurant to discover and we plan to come back again and again. A must-try for any food lover.

Wonderful! 3/26/06

My partner and I went to Veil last night for a cocktail and appetizer. I had read about the foi gras peanut butter and jelly toast and was longing to try it, but alas, it's not on the menu any more. So we settled for moroccan mini lamb burgers and lobster macaroni and cheese. Fantastic! I also had the Veil Cocktail, which was beautiful and enjoyable, and really packed a punch. Before we could stop ourselves, we ordered two more appetizers - roasted beets, and the beef cheeks with red onion cream and tomatoe confit. Heavenly! We spent too much money, but were celebrating a return from Central America where we spent a week eating stewed chicken and potato salad (don't get me wrong, I love stewed chicken and potato salad, but I was ready for a change). Am looking forward to returning soon for dinner!

Outstanding!!!

My wife and I had dinner last night at Veil and couldn't be more impressed! Let me start by saying something about the design - we just moved here from NYC and couldn't feel more at home with such details...the beautiful cream colored booths and banquettes, the ivory communal tables, warm lighting (made two 45 year olds look 30 again!), and chic bathrooms - I'd go on but lets get to the food! We started our dinner with the Kobe beef cheeks and The Foie Gras (I love the name!) - both were succulent in every way possible...and definitley worth the price! Our main courses wowed us even more - the seared tuna which was layed on top of an amazing pesto sauce with black olives and topped with a poached egg was absolutely to die for - I'm craving it as I type! My wife had the Duck which was equally amazing...okay now I'm getting hungry - must return to Veil! Oh, and don't forget about the peanut butter ice cream and nutter butters for dessert! I can't wait to go back...not just for the food, but for the outstanding quality of service, cuisine, and friendliness..two thums way up!
