The first of Washington's hipster clubs, Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) was founded by Eric Hilton of internationally known deep-house DJ duo the Thievery Corporation. The ESL transformed from an underground nightspot to king of DC's neo-lounge culture. Not only has it spawned other clubs like Dragonfly (run by the same owner) and copycats like the Blue Room, ESL has launched a record label of the same name. Weekends find lines along 18th Street fueled by the hipper-than-thou attitude of ESL bouncers. If you don't look the part (and the criteria can depend on time, date and the doorman's mood), you don't get in. After you locate the inconspicuous entrance, walk up the first skinny staircase to find young urbanites sunk into couches, hovering around the bar, dancing in the back room or mingling on the deck. Up on the next level, people squeeze into the front room to hear jazz combos improvise. Although the physical expansion over the years (the huge second-floor side room and deck) of this hard-to-find place has eroded some of its intimacy, ESL has remained one of Washington's premier clubs to hear new dance music and great classic jazz. Don't let the cover charge (around $10) deter you. Arrive before 10PM, and, usually, you can get in for free.

Lounge Lizard

Love the Lounge. Wish Farid was still getting dirty on the 1 and 2’s. If you can get in you will enjoy yourself. The drinks are stiff and the music is something else.

bad lines

This place is racist, sexist, and bouncer is a wannabe NYC club filter *******. Now, many visitors passing by on Friday night in DC think the place is gay, because he kept only men on the street and let only his friends in - both men and women. After waiting in line 30 minutes when there were NOT many people in the bar, my friends visiting from Boston now think that DC bars are lame and we ended up going the the Front Page to hang with 19 year old twits. They will now report back to Boston that DC is a NYC wannabe with NO game! Thanks alot - I will no longer go to clubs in this area, and keep all friends from going there and definitely all visitors will go to Capitol Hill where bars are friendly. Oh - and gay bars let EVERYONE in and make LOTS of money - I will take all my straight friends to 17th street and Halo from now on!

Not great for guys
By bodiesoc on 04/03/2007
Have gone 3 times....the first time we had a big group with ~10 guys and girls. We got in no problem. The place was alright -- really liked the open patio upstairs. The drinks were overpriced for the alcohol they were pouring, and good luck hearing any attempt at conversation inside. The second time was just myself and 3 other guys, and the bouncer gives us the "We have too many guys" sh*t. The third time we were meeting girls there. Again, myself and 2-3 other guys, and the door guy pulls the same "We have too many girls." He made three of the girls we were meeting come to the front and prove that we were indeed meeting girls in the building (wouldn't even let one do it because some garbage about not letting 4 guys in with only 1 girl). Absolutely ridiculous. The roof is awesome, but, other than that, this place has few redeeming features, and the hassle of trying to get in unless you have a girl physically at your side is simply not worth it.
