The space on the Southwest waterfront that housed Hogate's restaurant for decades got a major makeover and was reborn as H2O in December 2003. Local nightclub impresario Abdul Khanu, owner of Platinum and the now-defunct VIP Club, is the man behind the restaurant and lounge, which has become a serious celebrity magnet. Just a few of the big names to grace the waterfront spot include Bill Clinton, Natalie Portman and P. Diddy, along with a steady stream of appearances by MTV 'Real World' cast members. The 42,000-square-foot space is reminiscent of a luxury yacht with dark wood, large outdoor patios and striking views of the Potomac. Inside, dimly lit tables and circular booths create intimate nooks. The dining room gives way to a dance floor on weekends when throngs of young, well-dressed partiers line up to get inside and mix it up. International Fridays bring hip-hop, house and Latin beats, and Soul Food Saturdays skew to R&B, reggae and hip-hop. (Tip: Sign up for the guest list on H2O's Web site and arrive early to avoid the long lines.) If dining is your mission, start out with a basket of rum buns, the slightly sweet rolls Hogate's was famous for. The seafood-heavy menu also pays homage to the restaurant's predecessor with "Hogate's classics," including several platters piled high with seafood. The broiled captain's platter comes with cod, lobster tail, shrimp, scallops, oysters, clams and a crab cake. Turf options include filet mignon, T-bone steak and grilled chicken. -- Amanda McClements

Sat NOT 4 ME - Sun NOT BAD
By klmoore323 on 09/17/2006
Saturday night was for the MTV and 106 & Park crowd "dressing to impress"...it just wasn't for me (a mid-thirties professional woman who is looking for substance over style), but I can see the appeal of the place to its core audience...18-25 year olds. The best bet is to try H2O for Sunday Brunch - $25 for unlimited Mimosas and tasty brunch classics in the beautiful, spacious dining room with great views of the Potomac. You can still dress to impress the post-church crowd.

Dont do it

If you're over 25 and now appreciate the finer things in life don’t waste your time with this place. It’s GHETTO in everyway. But if you just turned 21 and like platinum teeth, fur coats, and BAPE hoodies you'll fit right in. You’re guaranteed to see a least one person dancing on a table with two bottles of Moet in each hand doing his best Diddy impression. I know this may appeal to some people, just not me.

Only Saving Grace is the Food
By emmyjanesmomma on 03/15/2006
Before visiting D.C., I checked out the AOL city guide and H2O popped up at the top of the list. After visiting their website as well, I thought "this is the place to celebrate our birthday (mine and 3 of my friends) dinner!!!!" How cool and posh?! I was dead wrong. I agree with another review that it was GHETTO!!!! Our table was some fold-up metal number covered with a table cloth, plus the wine glasses were dirty and not even glass! The waitress (who was very young and inexperienced) even brought out the wrong bottle of wine! We should have known when we arrived and there was a group of loud, obnoxious middle school kids there for a field trip. I guess they went off of the city guide too! I must admit though that the food and waterfront view were pretty nice, but it gets a D- for atmosphere and wait staff. I hope the club is better than the restaurant, but I'd be afraid of wasting my time after an over-priced meal in the ghetto!
